PART-2
Vidya Abhyasa (Studies)
His Upanayanam was performed by Sri Pedda Jeeyar Swamiji in a mass ceremony at the Lakshmi Narayana Temple in Hyderabad on 15th February 1975. He obtained exposure to the activities to a greater extent when He was closely involved with Sri Pedda Jeeyar Swamiji in the Swadhyaya Jnana Yajnam during April 1975. Sri Pedda Jeeyar Swamiji trained Him with the knowledge of and the methods used to maintain and develop all His organizations. Followed by this was Sri Srimannarayana Ramanujacharyulu’s visit to Badari Kshethram along with Sri Pedda Jeeyar Swamiji. Here, amidst the incredibly serene and highly spiritual atmosphere, He was made to learn the meaning of the divine Ashtakshari Manthram and to recite it again and again as per Sasthras, for a period of two months, by His Acharya. Blessed are the majestic and pious mountain ranges of Himalayas for having witnessed the spiritual communion of two such Remarkable Acharyas.
Enriched with the spiritual insight of the supreme ecstasy which He experienced with His Acharya at Badari for a period of two months, He was sent back to Vasudevasramam for Vidyabhyasa (Studying) under the guidance of Sri Gopalacharya Swamiji in 1977. His exceptionally high grasping power amazed Sri Gopalacharya Swamiji who equipped Him with the knowledge of Samsrkrutha Sahithya (Sanskrit Literature), Dravida Vedantha (Tamil Vedantha), Sri Bhagavath Vishaya and other grantthas. Sri Gopalacharya Swamiji expressed – “In contrast to a time period of 5 to 6 years required by students, in general, to learn Sri Bhagavath Vishaya, He merely took less than 2 years to gain expertise in my teachings which included Samsrkrutha Sahithya, Dravida Vedantha apart from Sri Bhagavath Vishaya.”
Prior to this, He had mastered the Vedas and Upanishads, especially the recitation of Rig Veda, at SriRangam, under the supreme guidance of Sri Pedda Jeeyar Swamiji. The remarkable quality of He being an ‘Eka Santhagrahi’ (The One who remembers whatever He goes through just once) was probably exposed at this juncture as He mastered all the subjects in less than half of the usually required time.
HOW DID HE BECOME JEEYAR SWAMIJI?
Jeeyar is a SriVaishnavite Sanyasi. The word Jeeyar in Sanskrit is based on the root Jee which means, to win (Jaya). The suffix of ‘Yar’ is the symbol of respect given to an ascetic, drawn from Tamil tradition. Jeeyar implies the one who has control over all his senses and is able to win over the challenges posed by others by means of arguments for which He has to master the Vedas and the Sasthras.
At Vijayawada, Ubhaya Vedantha Sabhas are conducted every year on the occasion of Dasara. At one such Sabha, He started learning Sri Bhashyam from Sri Pedda Jeeyar Swamiji and finally mastered it under the guidance of Sri T.K Gopalacharya Swamiji. Successively, in 1980, at Hanumakonda, when Sri Pedda Jeeyar Swamiji was miserably ill, He extended unutterably admirable care and service to His Acharya. People who witnessed it were stunned by His inexplicably high degree of dedication and devotion towards His Acharya. A full account of such a superb Acharya-Sishya relationship can never be elucidated in words.
Owing to ill-health, Sri Pedda Jeeyar Swamiji was taken to Hyderabad where He attained Paramapadam on the day of Vaikunttha Dwadasi, 31st December 1979. He left without having nominated any successor. As a result of this, a state of confusion arose. The then Jeeyar Swamiji of Tirupathi suggested that Srimannarayana Ramanujacharyulu may fill the vacuum created by Sri Pedda Jeeyar Swamiji. At the age of 23, with utmost seriousness in thoughts, He considered it and took His Mother’s consent before taking up this esteemed rank full of numerous crucial responsibilities. How great would be the Mother who would ‘give away’ Her Child for the welfare of the society? Hardly any support from others encouraged Her when she, Smt. Alivelumanga Thayaru, blessed Him and whole-heartedly allowed Him to go ahead and follow His Grandfather’s footsteps. Many salutations to The Mother who exemplified such a high degree of sacrifice !
In February 1980, at Sri Perumbudur, in the presence of the Jeeyar Swamiji of Sri Perumbudur and under the able guidance of Jeeyar Swamiji of Tirupathi, Sri Srimannarayana Ramanujacharyulu took up Sanyasa Asramam according to the methods prescribed in the Sasthras. The One who was lovingly called Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji was conferred upon us officially on this day. Incidentally, Sri Pedda Swamiji and Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji shared the common name of Srimannarayana Ramanujacharyulu.
